What does unwrapping a model do, and why is it important?

A UV map is a flat picture of a 3D model'ssurface that makes it easy to wrap textures around it. UV unwrapping is the name for the process of making a UV map. Since X, Y, and Z are already used in the 3D space via 3D sculpting software, U and Vrefer to the horizontal and vertical axes of the 2D space.
